WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE VISIT

Arrival

You will be greeted by the presenter in the paddock who will discuss the dates and styles of construction of both the church and farmhouse. As you walk through the paddock, the lava flows of bluestone (used in the construction of the buildings) are noted as well as a discussion as to the use of these paddocks by the early settlers.

Garden

As the group moves to the closer surrounds of the house, the role and history of the garden leads to discussions about the plants grown, the need for fruit, vegetables and herbs when they were so far from the shops and the only method of transport was foot, horse or horse and buggy.

Cart shed

This will lead to the cart shed showing a diorama of farm buildings that no longer exist. More discussions about the construction of the shed and the varied use of this building including the nest boxes and animal nursery, showing the daily life of all members of the family.

Inside the farmhouse

Students will tour the inside of the farmhouse, considering the room function and objects. They will note there was no electricity or town water delivered to the house, leading to discussions as to what they used for light in the evenings, how they entertained themselves and how different it is for them in their own houses today. The main display room with its model of the ship Pribislaw is used to explain the voyage made by the family from Hamburg, the length of time it took and the early settlement of Westgarthtown. The exhibits in the other parts of the house are discussed, including such items in the pantry and kitchen as the meat safe, butter churn and butter pats, candle holders and the preserved fruit from the garden to supply food throughout the year.

Outbuildings

The outbuildings of the smokehouse and the bathhouse are also visited. Smoking meats onsite is discussed and compared with smoked meats of today.

CHECKLIST & FAQ FOR PLANNING YOUR EXCURSION

Clothing

Ziebell’s farmhouse visits are conducted both indoors and outdoors and include walking through paddocks. Shoes with enclosed toes are recommended as the surfaces are sometimes uneven or damp.

Name tags

It does help the presenter if each student wears a name tag (first name only). This allows the presenter to communicate more effectively with the children.

Meals

Students need to bring their own morning tea and/or lunch and water bottles. There are toilets available at the site.

First aid kit

Please bring a first aid kit including any specific medications such as allergy EpiPens or asthma inhalers as our first aid kit does not include these items.

Specific learning needs

Please advise the booking coordinator at the time of the booking if there are students in your group with specific needs or access considerations. Please discuss your needs when making the booking.

Working with children & police checks

All of our tour guides hold a current Working with Children and Police Check.
